We could never express in words what a wonderful experience this was for our family. It all started last Christmas when we took the 3 oldest boys to see Savior of the World at the Conference Center for their first time. We of course loved it, noticed there were several parts for young boys, and wondered what it would be like to be in the production some day. Then after we did the play Suessical together over the summer, we gained the confidence we needed to audition for it. After a little convincing, Orson agreed to let us do it, meaning a lot more nights at home taking care of Colby and Micah. This time it was Kurt who was given a larger role of Joshua, son of one of the women (see above) who has seen the risen Savior and he asks many questions of the women that we all wonder ourselves. He did such a great job in this role and we were so proud. One night, Elder Neil Anderson, the apostle, come to see the show with his family, spoke to the entire cast afterwards, and shook Kurt and Deveri's hands.
This is all the children that were in our cast (Many leads played in both casts meaning 30 performances, but most of us just performed 3 times a week). Derek played the beggar and Lance played Joseph's nephew who helped build and carry the wedding canopy and also a Temple boy. Deveri played Mary's aunt who sings at her betrothal. When we weren't playing parts on stage, we played angels watching down on earth from heaven (the "collonaide"). We never grew tired of watching the same scenes over and over again, it still touches you every time and sometimes you'd catch something that gave you new insight.
We were so grateful to many family and friends that came to watch the production. Orson's parents and sister even came down from Idaho to see it. Our goal is to wait until Micah is old enough and convince Orson to join us then do it again as a whole family!
We were assigned to districts similar to if you were on a mission. This is our district, the "Jericho" district. We would have a little devotional each night before we'd perform and were even given assignments like greeting the audience and cleaning the dressing rooms. We grew to love these special people.
I got to spend a lot of quality time with my boys and I'm so grateful we were able to experience this amazing spiritual experience together. Derek and I were both able to play being resurrected then reunited each night on stage, which was really special. I also loved watching Lance and Kurt descend from "heaven" in such reverence for the Savior as they went as angels to be present at the birth of Jesus Christ. The Christmas season will never be the same again for us! (This is also the last time you will see the boys with such incredibly long hair. They had to grow it out for months to be more authentic, but we cut it off the very next day after our last performance on New Years Day.)
