Derek, the Overachiever

Here is Derek (3rd grader) at the Spelling Bee. And here is the story. Derek is in a class of 25 gifted students gathered from about 8 elementary schools. Since they are doing 4th and 5th grade spelling curriculum anyway, the school allows them to participate in the Spelling Bee which is normally just for the upper grades. Since he was competeing against other gifted kids, we were surprised when he won his class Bee and got to go to the School Bee with the 3 top spellers from each class. There he got through several rounds and ended up taking 6th place in the school. We were so proud, but he was so disappointed because 1st through 5th got medals and prizes. They ended up later giving him a special certificate and prize because a 3rd grader had never done so well in he past. Deveri served on the planning committee and got to be one of the judges. Way to go Derek!
Here he is earning his Wolf Scout award. Notice mom's cool necklace that holds the soon to be giant collection of scout pins.

This is Derek's Science Fair project, which was completely voluntary and just for fun for 3rd graders. He made up the idea, did the experiment by himself, and loved every minute of it. He wanted to see which type of liquid would melt an ice cube the fastest: maple syrup, milk, salt water, soda, and water. It ended up being just the plain water by a long ways. He had a great time and took notes on other projects for next year.

Oh, Derek. He's going to be so bored with the work in Jr. High. I'm so proud to have such amazing nephews!
